What is chronic fatigue?

Chronic fatigue syndrome is characterized by a state of extreme fatigue that lasts more than six months and it is not a symptom of a common disease.

Chronic fatigue is often related to lack of sleep which makes a person wake up in the morning with a feeling of exhaustion. This can be accompanied by memory problems, problems with concentration and attention, dizziness that gets worse with movement, such as getting up from a chair or sofa. This disorder is a the body's response to stimuli from both internal and external influences.

Fatigue has three components:

  • Generalized weakness (asthenia)
  • Reduced ability to maintain activity (i.e. you tire more quickly and with less effort)
  • Difficulty concentrating and emotional instability (mental fatigue).

Both psychological factors (such as melancholy or worries) and physical factors can contribute to chronic fatigue and its exacerbation (endocrine and metabolic diseases, infections, cardiopulmonary diseases, severe anemia, sleep disorders). It can also occur as a result of substance abuse or drug use, such as when taking sleeping pills, antihypertensives, anti-allergy medications, or antidepressants.

How do we treat this chronic fatigue?

The diagnosis of persistent fatigue cannot be verified with a specific test. Additionally, depending on the circumstances, chronic fatigue may have clinical signs and symptoms that resemble those of other diseases and conditions, including sleep difficulties, anemia, diabetes, hypothyroidism, and psychiatric disorders.

Treatment of chronic fatigue focuses on symptom relief because there is no drug therapy that can "eradicate" chronic fatigue.

Here are some tips/improvements to follow that can help reduce chronic fatigue:
